CHAPTER 13

Lindsay

Sitting in the living room watching them get dinner ready is strange. I’m completely relaxed over here. There’s a fire in the fireplace. I have a glass of wine, and even though I’m not in the kitchen, they’re still including me in the conversation. I feel welcome, and more importantly, I feel wanted.

Diane’s house never felt that way. The whole time I was with Kyle, it felt like she went out of her way to make me feel uncomfortable. The constant unwelcome vibe was there every single time I stepped across the threshold. I was clearly an outsider and was always treated as such. Kyle was the only one who talked to me when we were there. And I don’t think I’ve ever had a meal at their table.

I always got the sense that they were waiting for me to leave so they could resume their normal life without me. It wasn’t just the sense that I was interrupting them. It felt bigger somehow. Closer to intruding but still difficult to put into words. Regardless of the label I assign to it, all I know is that it was always uncomfortable.

Brooks isn’t the only one including me in the conversation. Ashley, Roslyn, Sage and Snowbie are joining the discussion. Annalise has even brought her glass of wine into the living room where I’m sitting. Everyone who enters the room greets me with a nod and acknowledges my presence.

Annalise questions me softly. “How are you getting settled? Do you need anything? Ashley said that you learned about shifters yesterday. I just learned a few weeks ago. If you want to talk, I’m a good listener. Maybe we can help each other.” Her smile is sincere. I get the impression she really means what she says.

“Thank you. I might take you up on that. The shifter part was scary at first. Seeing it happen right in front of me was alarming. Since I’ve been here, it seems completely normal. Like everyone should be able to do it. The rest of it, the fate part, seems a little harder to believe.” I sip my wine.

Annalise smiles and watches Tanner on the other side of the room as she talks. “I understand. I had convinced myself that I’d fallen into a magical land full of perfect people. That one day they’d discover I was a fraud and throw me out. The more I was with Tanner, the stronger the feelings for him got. And the more I didn’t want to leave. Now, I’m completely in love and can’t imagine being anywhere else. And they figured out that I’m flawed and accepted me anyway.”

I look over toward Brooks, who meets my gaze with a wink. “It’s funny that you describe it that way. Roslyn mentioned something similar. That once I’m on the other side of all this, it’ll all make sense.”

Annalise stands. “I think dinner’s almost ready. Are you coming?”

“Yes, right behind you.” I stand and follow her.

She’s right. This place does seem magical. Not only am I welcome here, but it appears to be flawless in every way.
